According to a study presented at the meeting of anesthesiologists, patients who receive acupuncture during knee replacement and pregnant surgery report less pain and require much fewer opioids afterward.
The study results showed that 75% of patients who received acupuncture during surgery used little or no opioids after surgery, compared with 15% of patients who did not receive acupuncture.
The study included 47 patients who underwent a primary total knee replacement. All patients received a standard protocol for drug pain relief with opioids and the addition of electroacupuncture.
With the addition of acupuncture, most patients experienced significant reductions in postoperative opioid use compared to controls.
